Eric H Mao of NYUSH talks about the courses offered by the university,  the significance of the Center for Global Asia and a lot more

New York University Shanghai (NYUSH), the first American university with independent legal status approved by the Ministry of Education in China is offering a variety of masters and PhD degree programmes which are focused on domains important to contemporary society. Wondering how they do it? Ask Eric H Mao, Assistant Dean of Graduate and Advanced Education, NYUSH who caught up with us for a quick chat. Excerpts:

What are the programmes offered by NYU Shanghai?

NYU Shanghai offers a four-year undergraduate programme along with several postgraduate programmes. Undergraduates pursue a liberal arts and sciences education in humanities, social sciences, natural sciences and mathematics, with the opportunity to major in nearly 20 courses of study, from business to biology, neural science to electrical engineering, global China studies to interactive media arts, and many others. All courses are taught in English. Non-Chinese students also pursue a Chinese language curriculum designed to impart them with working fluency. All undergraduates study abroad, typically during their third year, at other NYU campuses around the world.

In India, we will continue to build and deepen our relationships with the top schools, increase our enrollment of the best Indian students, and explore research collaborations across a variety of disciplines

Do you offer placement counselling services for students?

Yes. NYU Shanghai features a Career Development Centre dedicated to the professional development of students and committed to connecting them with opportunities with various employers. More than 15 per cent of our non-Chinese students have remained in China. More than half are working and nearly 40 per cent have gone on to pursue advanced degrees. Their companies and organisations include NGOs like ACCESS Health International, leading companies like Adidas, Blackrock, China International Capital Corporation, Google, IBM, Morgan Stanley, and service organisations like the Peace Corps.

What are the preferred courses by Indian students at NYU Shanghai? How many Indian students enroll each year?

Indian undergraduates and young professionals have also shown strong interest in our new one-year Master of Science programs, jointly offered with the NYU Stern School of Business, in Data Analytics and Quantitative Finance.

Going places: During their undergraduate studies, students will spend up to two semesters studying in New York, Abu Dhabi or at one of NYU’s eleven study away centers in global cities around the world

What will be the significance of the Center for Global Asia?

The Center for Global Asia at NYU Shanghai serves as the hub within the NYU Global Network University system to promote the study of Asian interactions and comparisons, both historical and contemporary. The overall objective of the Center is to provide global societies with information on the contexts for the reemerging connections between the various parts of Asia through research and teaching.

Would you say that NYU Shanghai has become the preferred destination for students from Asian countries?

There is simply no other university in the world like NYU, and no other place like Shanghai where one can receive a world-class global education, become immersed in the culture of modern China, create relationships with a worldwide community of classmates and faculty, and acquire an experience that will be forever distinguishing.

What are the expansion plans for NYU Shanghai?

NYU Shanghai is poised to nearly double its student population over the next couple of years, reaching more than 2,000 undergraduate and graduate students. The university also has aggressive plans for new faculty hiring, new program development, and advancing research initiatives.
