In 2018, researches from All India Institute of Medical Sciences — in the study Selfies: A Boon or Bane? — found that from the 259 reported selfie deaths and accidents between 2011 and 2017 around the world, about half of them occurred in India. Thus, making India the number one country when it comes to selfie-related deaths. As per their research, most of these deaths happen due to drowning, by being hit by a train or a vehicle or falling from a great height. The most recent selfie death which was reported was that of T Mercy Steffy, 24, who was trying to take a selfie near a well in Kandigai village.
In more sad news, while attempting to take a selfie with her friends, a 20-year-old drowned in the Guntur Branch Canal at Karlakunta village in Nakarikallu mandal of Guntur district on November 10, 2019. Though police are yet to receive any complaint regarding it, the incident itself came to light on Monday.
Deceased I Adilakshmi was reportedly visiting Karlakunta with her friends to attend a function in the village. Before reaching the village, the group stopped their vehicle and got down from it to capture pictures at the canal bund. As per the eye-witnesses, the 20-year-old slipped into the canal while taking a selfie along with other friends Mukesh, Nakarikallu SI K Udaya Babu said.
Upon hearing the group's cry for help, some locals jumped into the canal and managed to rescue Mukesh. Adilakshmi was also brought out by them, but in a critical condition. She passed away on the way to Narasaraopet hospital for treatment.
As per information, she was a third-year BTech student of Vignan University located in Vadlamudi village of Chebrolu mandal.
