Telangana schools to get safety boards with Rs 1 crore sanction

The initiative offers ₹500 per school but could greatly benefit student well-being, says Education Department

HYDERABAD: In a significant move to strengthen child safety in schools, the School Education department, Telangana, has sanctioned Rs 1.05 crore for installing safety and security display boards in 21,010 government schools across the state, with special focus on elementary schools.

According to the Education department, although the initiative allocates only Rs 500 per school, it has the potential to create a lasting impact on student well-being. The initiative aims to improve awareness and preparedness among students, many of whom, especially in elementary schools, are often unaware of basic safety measures or emergency contacts.

The display boards will prominently feature key emergency contact numbers, including those of the police, State Counselling Helpline, Fire department, Mandal Education Officer and Station House Officer, along with safety guidelines.

Officials said when safety instructions are displayed in common areas, they become part of students’ daily environment and reinforce safe behaviour. Over time, such constant exposure will help children internalise important practices, including responding to emergencies, understanding personal safety and knowing how to seek help.

Another key strength of the initiative is inclusivity. The display boards will be prepared in Telugu, Urdu and English to ensure language does not become a barrier to understanding safety instructions.

“In recent years, concerns around student safety — ranging from accidents to emergency preparedness — have gained increasing attention. In this context, even a modest intervention like a well-designed display board can serve as a first line of defence during critical situations,” a senior official said.
