The Tamil Nadu Government College Teachers' Association has asked the Chief Minister to convert autonomous colleges into government colleges. So far, out of 41 autonomous colleges in Tamil Nadu, 14 had been converted to government colleges, the TNGCTA said.

The Association believes that by converting these colleges in rural areas will highly benefit students and so the teachers would also have better working environments, “For the last ten years, the Tamil Nadu Government College Teachers' Association has been urging the government to transform these colleges in Tamil Nadu into government colleges in order to improve the education of rural students in Tamil Nadu and to safeguard the welfare of teachers and non-teaching staff working in these campuses,” they explained.

The Association said it was now thankful that the government had followed up on their request and converted 14 out of the 41 colleges but requested that the remaining 27 would also be converted in 2020-2021. “On behalf of TNGCTA, we thank the Chief Minister, Education Minister and the Secretary of the Department of Education and other college directors. But we also request that the government college professors are given a stipend for their MPhil and PhDs,” the TNGCTA requested.
