#StopHindiImposition: Will the next anti-Hindi war be fought in cyberspace?

Johanna Deeksha

During the 1940's and the 1950's at various intervals, Tamilians took to the streets to protest against Hindi Imposition. The protests in 1955 were the most rigorous of them all and went down in history as one of the most iconic movements in India. Today, the anti-Hindi imposition movement seems to have taken birth again except this time, it's on social media. While meme-creators have been having quite a field day these last few days, from Nesamani to the #StopHindiImposition, a lot of twitterati seems to seriously concerned with the three-language recommendation of the National Draft Committee. Since it is social media, a lot of people from neighbouring countries like Karnataka, Kerala, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh have also joined in this time, condemning the new recommendations of the draft policy.

However, even though the movement has started on social media, a lot of people are saying that that is not where it will end. Soon, the protests could flow into the streets too. That is, the people claim if the recommendation is accepting by the Committee. One of the users said, "Is it time for another Jallikattu?" But for now, the supporters of the anti-Hindi imposition are only using social media to express their feelings. Here are some of the most interesting tweets —
