The anti-ragging committee of Surat Municipal Institute of Medical Education and Research (SMIMER Hospital and Medical college) has suspended five resident doctors for misbehaving and ragging junior doctors in its surgery ward five days ago.

Two junior doctors of the first year of the PG course of surgery department had made an online complaint in the anti-ragging cell of the UGC about misbehaviour by seniors of the Orthopedic department after the incident on Tuesday.

After a heated argument about referring a patient, the seniors had allegedly caught the juniors from surgery by the collar and marched them in the ward.

Dean of the college, Kalpana Desai, said that the anti-ragging committee of the college has decided to suspend one accused doctor for two semesters, ie, for a year and another one for one semester or six months while three others have been suspended for one month each.

Notably, after the incident, a junior from the orthopaedic department had also filed a complaint of ragging and beating up against a senior from Surgery department.

Ms Desai said that in the second case the accused has been issued a strict warning.

She said that as per the UGC guidelines police was also informed about the incident within 24 hours.
