The University Grants Commission (UGC) released a circular whereby it announced an increase in private as well as government college seats by 25 per cent in the new academic year. This notification by the UGC will have a huge impact on Delhi University which has almost 54 colleges offering admission to undergraduate students.

DU had a total of 54,970 seats last year, with a 25 per cent increase, the number will go up to 68,712 approximately.

The recent decision of reservation of 10 per cent seats for the economically weaker section in general category has lead to this decision so that the accommodations can be made easily.

Seats in Delhi University have been increased in the past as well. In 2007, seats were increased after reservations were made for Other Backward Classes (OBC).

The universities are expected to provide the seat matrix and financial requirements’ data by January 31, 2019, to the UGC after which the commission will release implementation modalities by March 31, 2019.

Not only Delhi University but also IITs, IIITs, NITs, and other central universities except for eight institutions of excellence, research institution and institution of national and strategic importance are required to bring this change in their system.

Once all the official work is done, the universities would also need to bring changes in the reservation and seat details in the information brochure as well as in the official website of the university and also plan the admission process accordingly for the upcoming 2019 session.
