The Father of the Nation was assassinated on January 30, 1948, but it was only on his 62nd death anniversary, that is on January 30, 2010, that some of his ashes, which were given to Gandhi's friend for safe-keeping, were immersed off the coast of Durban in KwaZulu Natal province of South Africa. Gandhi had spent his early years in South Africa where he organised his first satyagraha as well. It was also in Pretoria, one of the country's three capital cities, where the infamous train incident occurred where Gandhi was kicked out of a locomotive by a white man despite having a first-class ticket. South African leader Nelson Mandela and civil rights icon Martin Luther King cited Gandhi as their inspiration.

Gandhi was shot three times in the chest by Nathuram Godse on January 30, 1948 and it was a sad day not just for India but the whole country.

Rise of Hitler
It was on January 30, 1933, that Germany's war hero and President Paul von Hindenburg appointed Adolf Hitler as Reich Chancellor of Germany. Six years later, on the same day, Hitler delivered a lecture to the German Reichstag (parliament) and threatened the jews. And so the darkest chapter of history began.
