Careers in the times of COVID-19: What is the way forward?
Do not fall prey to peer group pressure and end up crash-landing in no man’s land
During the last workshop on Career Guidance that I had conducted for a reputed school in a semi-urban area, I was asked a question by one of the students as to what her prospects would be in the field of paramedical sciences. I was very appreciative of her thoughts, particularly when she had mentioned her intention to do research to help people in the community through her career. Incidentally, this programme was just before the pandemic struck the world. What stood out was her passion, and I would like to state that this is the key to successful career development.
Positivity in uncertain times: The present times are rather uncertain for every student. There is nothing much that students can do about it since it is a global phenomenon. I would suggest that you indulge in self-reflection. This is the best time to cool your heels to develop within yourself a firm resolve as to what career would make you happy.
Adaptive Intelligence: The new mantra that each one of us, particularly students, must be oriented to in the post-COVID scenario is the concept of ‘adaptive intelligence’. Those who can adapt to situations very quickly and restructure their priorities can make the best out of any adversity. Whenever we encounter a new environment, we must be prepared to quickly get conditioned to the stimulus of the situation and lead our mind through appropriate actions suitable to it.
The Way Forward:
Look for opportunities that you can make a difference with.
Use career options to serve the purpose of your life.
Unlock the fear within you and go with your instincts, something that will propel you.
Do not fall prey to peer pressure and end up in no man’s land.
Choose core sectors that are aligned to national development.
Try to be an answer to social questions with a paradigm shift towards entrepreneurship.
Treat this as a gift that nature has bestowed upon you to conquer.
Choose the core:
Choose core sectors that are aligned towards nation development
use the chance:
Use your career as an opportunity to fulfil the purpose of your life
Unlock the fear within you and follow your instincts to overcome it
