Dr S Gowri appointed as Vice Chancellor of Madras University for next three years

After months of anticipation, Madras University's Vice Chancellor has been appointed. Dr S Gowri, the director of the Educational Multimedia Research Centre at Anna University will take charge of the University for the next three years.

Gowri has been the recipient of the National Award for Outstanding Academic 2011 honoured by the Indian Society for Technical Education, New Delhi in 2012. He was previously the First Registrar of Anna University and the Chairman, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of the University. He has also been the Head of the Department of Media Sciences at the College of Engineering. Under his directorship, the EMMRC team won two National Awards consecutively from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. 

Gowri is a first generation graduate from Maravarmagalam in Sivagangai District of Tamilnadu and studied in the Tamil medium upto his 11th standard. He finished his BE from Thiyagarajar College of Engineering, Madurai Kamaraj University and he earned his MTech and PhD from IIT Madras. His areas of interest include Technical Education System Development, Precision Machining, Rapid prototyping, FEA, Biomedical Engineering, Medical Image analysis and Shape Memory Alloys.

He came to be Professor at Anna University in 2000 and was sharing responsibilities, in addition to teaching and research, as Project Head of Anna University – Federal Republic of Germany (AU-FRG) Institute for CAD/CAM. Later he took over as Chairman of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of Anna University. He has also chaired the team of experts for AICTE, UGC and TNSCST.

He has been holding additional social and administrative responsibilities at the capacity of – Honorary Secretary of Anna Gem Science Park Matriculation Higher Secondary School at Anna University. And as an Independent Director in the Board of Directors of TANSI, TEXCO, Arasu Cable TV of Government of Tamil Nadu since 2014. He is also the technical advisor to the DVAC and the Tamil Nadu Prisons Department.
