Many news reports suggest that the 19-year-old Meenakshi College of Engineering student was stabbed by her husband of only three weeks but the police say that this could be a case of a forceful marriage. The first-year BCom student was stabbed to death right outside her college in broad daylight on Friday, some have said the accused was her stalker, others say it was her husband.

Police have said that Ashwini Mohan had known her attacker, Alagesan for two years and he had harassed her repeatedly. After she turned down several of his advances, Alagesan allegedly showed up at her house on February 16 and forcefully tied a 'thali' around her neck. The family had lodged a complaint with the Maduravoyal Police after the incident. Ashwini's family had also asked her to stop attending college.

But in order for her to be able to start going back to college, Ashwini's mother had sent her to live with a relative in Jafferkhanpet, from where she started traveling to college. She was on her way to college on Saturday when Alagesan started a quarrel with her outside her college after which he pulled out his knife and stabbed her to death. He then allegedly doused himself with kerosene in an attempt to self-immolate but the passers-by stopped him and beat him up.

The Maduravoyal police are still investigating the first complaint to find out the actual reason for the attack.
