A group of geologists from the city have started a unique firm that connects freelance geologists throughout the country to individual projects and jobs. Acqua Geo consultancy, as it has been called, provide services in the field of groundwater exploration, geology, environmental science, rainwater harvesting systems, all under one roof.

It was founded by RM Ananya Vasudev, who has been associated with UNESCO in extensive field projects, Jaison Jacob, Venuprasad A, S Nabi and M Manjunath. This idea for the consultancy company came to the founders' minds when they found many companies offering to require experts to conduct GIS surveys, water explorations and various other works related to geology.

“After graduating we went for many job interviews. But we were offered a very less salary as compared to our qualifications. There was, however, a lot of work available out there," says Ananya. The team uses social networking platforms and connects its 300 members throughout the country to provide remunerations based on the projects taken up by any members. The Aqua Geo Consultancy team is supported by experienced professionals, academicians, and social scientists who work in individual associates capacities, adds Ananya.

Qualified resource persons and experienced team members who are from different disciplines of geosciences work with the team to complete the project and assignments. Apart from this, the company conducts field programmes for geography teachers and students on topics like mapping, topography, GPS and GIS.

The company has also collaborated with few educational institutes to sensitise children about the importance of geology. The company is in the process of collaboration with some top institutions of the country, says Ananya

Dr B Chandan Kumar, professor of Geology, Central University of Kerala says, “The initiative by the team to take the geology as a subject to common people in the education system is appreciable. I wish people, and government and private organizations make use of this team to sensitise people about the earth and the environment.”
