Surat fire: Fire tragedy in tuition centre claims lives of over 15 students

At least 15 students were killed and several others were injured in the Sarthana area of Surat in Gujrat when a massive fire broke out at a coaching centre on Friday afternoon. Disturbing visuals of people trapped on upper floors of the multi-storied building engulfed in fire jumping off the building in attempt to escape the blaze went viral over the socaial media in a few minues after the fire broke out at around 3:30 pm.

The building housed a tuition centre which catered to school children from Class 9 to Class 12. Reports suggest since the summer vacations were on, the students who were preparing for their Class 10 and Class 12 boards exams were in the coaching centre at the time of the incident.Huge plumes of smoke covered the area as the top two floors of the multi-storied commercial building, named Takshashila Complex, were engulfed in the fire.

Local residents were seen helping in the rescue operation.Cause of the fire was not immediately known, but most of the students were said to be between the ages of 14 and 17 who were attending tuition classes when fire broke out at the commercial complex.

The operation to douse the fire was still on till going to press."Students on fourth and third floor jumped off to the ground to save themselves from fire and smoke. Many have been rescued and sent to hospital. The operation to douse the fire is on," fire officiasl told newspersons.At least 11 other students have been admitted to various hospitals in the vicinity, confirmed Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani while announcing a compensation of Rs 4 lakh for the kin of the deceased. Children injured will be given proper & fast treatment, he said while expressing deep anguish over the incident. He also announced an inquiry into the incident.Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the incident. "Extremely anguished by the fire tragedy in Surat. My thoughts are with bereaved families. May the injured recover quickly. Have asked the Gujarat Government and local authorities to provide all possible assistance to those affected," he wrote on Twitter
