These two sisters from Odisha studying to be doctors are taking time out for their art. Here's how

Kindred spirits Sukanya and Ananya are artists who want to make more time for their art. Thus, they started their Instagram page to compliment their Etsy page and they are truly on a roll now

Two sisters, both passionate about art and looking for an outlet — such was the predicament of Sukanya and Ananya Mishra. While Sukanya (27) is pursuing her MDS in Periodontics and Implantology from Institute of Dental Sciences, Bhubaneswar, Ananya (21) is pursuing her Postgraduation in Applied Psychology from GITAM University, Visakhapatnam. Amidst an academically busy life, how does the duo find time for art? By willingly taking time to do it, of course! And it was this decision, and a little coaxing from their mother, that inspired them to start the Instagram page Tint Tales just two months ago. "While my sister is an introvert, art helps her express herself. For me, art is an escape from my day-to-day life," says Sukanya. And by setting aside merely 20 minutes a day, they together churn out wonderful artwork that catches the eye.

These self-taught sisters rotate the responsibility of handling the page on a weekly basis. Going by the posts on the page, Sukanya seems to have mastered the art of Pattachitra and Ananya's forte lies in sketching and drawing. They are also trying to add a touch of contemporary to their artwork for that extra appeal. An Etsy page has helped them bag their first international order just three weeks ago, from Florida, much to their delight. "Selling our artwork doesn't mean we are commercialising it. We just want people to appreciate what we have so that we are encouraged and are pumped to make more art," says the youngster.

While social media is a tough sea to navigate, the duo is learning the tricks of the trade soon enough. "I used to sell three to four of my artworks per month while pursuing my graduation, but social media is a different ball game altogether," says Sukanya. For now, they have a humble following of 984 and are trying to up their game by posting frequently and interacting with every user who comments on their artwork. "We both are still learners," she says as she smiles.

But why make the effort to find the time when their courses are so tough and when the world, in general, is going through a rough patch? "The lockdown was making me feel so unproductive. So I knew I had to do away with this feeling and art came to my rescue. It even makes my sister, who also attends her Bharatanatyam classes, happy during these dreary times," says Sukanya. She reiterates that taking out 20 minutes in a day for something that you really love shouldn't be too hard. Where there is a will, there is a way!

Pros and cons of social media, as per Sukanya:
- Pros: It's a great platform for the world to see your talent and to connect and communicate with other artists
- Cons: Due to the algorithms, artists who might not necessarily be better, get more traction
- Suggestion: Don't be disheartened because hard work always pays!
