Remembering the Courage and Sacrifice of India’s Police Forces

Observed every year on October 21, Police Commemoration Day honours the courage and sacrifice of police personnel who laid down their lives in the line of duty protecting the nation and its people.

The day marks the 1959 Hot Springs incident, when 10 brave CRPF soldiers were martyred in a clash with Chinese troops in Ladakh. Their sacrifice became a symbol of valour and duty.

Police forces across India organize parades and memorial ceremonies to pay homage to officers who made the ultimate sacrifice, reaffirming the spirit of service and dedication.

Located in New Delhi, the National Police Memorial stands tall as a tribute to over 36,000 police personnel who have lost their lives in service to the nation since independence.

Police officers serve as protectors, helpers, and first responders during crises — whether in natural disasters, accidents, or public emergencies — demonstrating courage and compassion every day.
