Sport is a cost-effective and flexible tool for advancing peace and development, operating across both grassroots and global levels. The 2030 Agenda recognises sport as an enabler of sustainable development, strengthening tolerance, social inclusion, health, education, and the empowerment of women, youth, and communities.
Sport operates at a scale few systems can match. Over 3.5 billion people watched the FIFA World Cup, while the Olympic Games brought together more than 200 nations in one global arena. The Indian Premier League draws hundreds of millions of viewers each season. Few platforms command this level of global attention, with sport turning viewership into a collective experience that cuts across language, geography, and identity.
According to WHO, physical inactivity contributes to over 5 million deaths annually. Sport reduces the risk of heart disease, diabetes, and depression, making it one of the most accessible and cost-effective public health tools available.
Women now make up around 40% of global sports participants, reflecting progress in access and inclusion. According to UNESCO, girls who engage in sport are more likely to stay in school while developing stronger leadership skills, higher self-esteem, better decision-making, and deeper community engagement.
