The 2025 theme, “Acting Together for Dignity and Equality,” focuses on uniting communities and nations to address the root causes of poverty and build sustainable solutions.
Over 700 million people worldwide still live in extreme poverty. The day calls for global solidarity to provide access to food, housing, education, and healthcare for everyone.
First observed in 1987 at the Trocadéro in Paris, where people gathered to honor victims of poverty. The UN officially recognised it in 1992.
Poverty is not only about lack of income, it’s about denied opportunities, discrimination, and injustice. Tackling inequality is key to breaking the cycle of deprivation.
Empowering the poor through education, skills, and social protection helps them build resilience and secure better livelihoods for future generations.
Governments, NGOs, and citizens must work hand in hand by creating inclusive policies, ensuring fair wages, and supporting sustainable development to eradicate poverty globally.
Each small step counts: donate, volunteer, support local initiatives, or spread awareness. Together, we can build a world where dignity and equality belong to everyone.
