Born on November 15, 1875, in present-day Jharkhand, Birsa Munda was a tribal freedom fighter and social reformer. He led the Munda Rebellion against British rule, fighting for the rights and dignity of India’s tribal communities.
Birsa Munda Jayanti is observed every year on November 15 to honour his legacy of courage and resistance. It coincides with Jharkhand Foundation Day, as the state was formed on the same date in 2000.
Raised in poverty, Birsa’s early experiences exposed him to exploitation under British landlords. His education and exposure to missionary schools inspired him to challenge injustice and unite tribal communities under the banner of self-rule.
Birsa led the Ulgulan (The Great Tumult) — a mass movement that sought to end British oppression and restore traditional land rights to the Adivasis. It became one of the earliest revolts against colonial exploitation in tribal India.
Birsa Munda emphasized the importance of cultural pride, social reform, and unity among tribes. He urged his people to reject superstition, embrace education, and work toward self-reliance — inspiring generations to uphold their identity and dignity.
Arrested by the British at just 25 years old, Birsa Munda died in prison in 1900 under mysterious circumstances. Despite his short life, his legacy continues to symbolize the spirit of resistance and indigenous pride.
Birsa Munda is the only tribal leader whose portrait hangs in the Central Hall of Parliament. In 2021, the government declared November 15 as Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas — a day to celebrate tribal heritage and heroes.
Birsa Munda’s ideals of justice, equality, and freedom continue to inspire India’s youth. His story is a reminder that true leadership comes from courage, compassion, and the will to fight for one’s people.
