World Population Day: Why it matters!

EdexLive Desk

It is observed on July 11 to raise awareness about global population issues and sustainability.
It was proposed by Dr KC Zachariah, a senior demographer at the World Bank.
The day was first observed on July 11, 1990 in more than 90 countries, inspired by the 5 billion mark reached in 1987.
The theme for 2025 is: “Empowering young people to create the families they want in a fair and hopeful world.”
This theme echoes the 1994 global pledge that everyone has the right to make informed choices about their lives and future.
World population surpassed 8 billion on November 15, 2022, per UN estimates
In 2025, the three most populous countries are India (1.46 billion), China (1.42 billion), and United States (347 million).
