GBS is a rare autoimmune disorder where the body attacks its peripheral nerves.
A 53-year-old man from Mumbai died due to GSB, making it the first case of death. He was admitted to the hospital on January 23, reports said.
Mumbai reported 192 suspected cases, 172 confirmed infections and seven fatalities. The outbreak has been traced to contaminated water sources.
An outbreak started in Pune and its surrounding areas on January 9, and within a month, the number of cases had crossed 200. Mumbai reported its first case on February 7, 2025.
As per reports, most patients recover, but severe cases require Intensive Care Unit (ICU) care.
Although the reason or cause is unknown, it is often triggered by infections like Campylobacter (food poisoning), respiratory infections, flu or in rare cases, vaccines.
