Once again, Infosys Co-founder Narayana Murthy has hit the headlines for doubling-down on a statement he made months back...
In an October 2023 interview, Murthy had said, "...my request is that our youngsters must say, This is my country, I want to work 70 hours a week"
Months later, reiterating his stance on working hard at the CNBC Global Leadership Summit on November 14, he said, "In India, there is no alternative to hard work. You have to work very hard even if you are smart. I am proud of having worked hard all my life. So I'm sorry I have not changed my view, I will take this opinion to the grave" | (Pic: CNBC)
"I believe in hard work over work-life balance....I was very disappointed when in 1986 we shifted from six-day work week to five-day work week," he said
Explaining his belief in working hard, he said, "Farmers and factory workers work very hard and hard work is common in India as most people take on physically demanding professions. Therefore, those of us who received education at a huge discount, thanks to the subsidy from the government for all these education, owe it to the less fortunate citizens of India to work extremely hard"
Speaking about the discipline he followed, Murthy once said, "I used to go (to work) six and a half days. Even in the electronics area, I used to work six and a half days. And every day I would leave home at 6 am in the morning. I would be in the office at 6.20. And I would leave by about 8.15, 8.30 pm"
"I & my wife Sudha Murthy dedicated more than three and a half hours each evening to reading with our children during their school years. It is for parents to create an environment of discipline at home for children to study," Murthy said about parenting.
After receiving backlash from many people for proposing 70-hour work week, Murthy was under fire for commenting on parenting. "How can we spend 3.5 hours with kids, when we are working 70 hours a week," questioned many. There were also a few Good Samaritans appreciating how Murthy lives his life.
