CJI Chandrachud’s retirement: A look at his notable judgements in education

Today, November 8, 2024, DY Chandrachud has officially retired as the 50th Chief Justice of India
DY Chandrachud served as CJI for two years, starting on November 9, 2022. He has been a Supreme Court Judge since 2016.
Throughout his career, he authored about 500 judgements.
Here are a few of his notable judgements in the field of education:
In one of his final judgements today, a seven-member bench led by him overruled the S Azeez Basha Vs Union of India verdict of 1967, enabling Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) to be entitled to minority status
In the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test - Undergraduate (NEET-UG) 2024 paper leak hearing, CJI DY Chandrachud observed that there was no prima facie evidence of a widespread leak of malpractice, and overruled petitions for retest & cancellation
He led a seven-member Constitution Bench in delivering a 6:1 verdict in favour of allowing subcategorisation in the SC/ST reservations
He upheld the Bombay High Court's decision to invalidate a Maharashtra government notification to exempt a few private schools from admitting EWS category students
A bench led by him set aside an Allahabad High Court verdict that declared the Uttar Pradesh Board of Madarsa Education Act unconstitutional
