Here's why positive mental attitude is a must in an employment scenario

Nicholas Francis is a HR mentor based in Madurai. He serves as a memeber of board of studeies of Social Work in colleges and contributes to the professional training and development of institutes

I have often come across the saying that a candidate has lost out on a golden opportunity in a job placement due to their poor mindset. Now one may wonder what is the role of mindset for an individual to be successful in an employment scenario?. Mindset can be better expressed in the modern day terminology as Positive Mental Attitude, which is nothing but being positive about oneself. It is can be taken as a mental state that gives you warmth and strength to become successful in life by optimum use of your talents and abilities.

It can be achieved by an individual if they have faith and confidence in themselves; reflect hope and optimism which eventually leads up to courage. An individual who has a very good positive mental attitude will be ‘gogetters’, who can take the initiative to perform to the best of their abilities and always be enthusiastic about the outcome on a positive note. But in reality what we find common today among the young graduates and youth is that they are not very confident about their own performance in a placement opportunity which has a lot of negativity tagged on to them.

They seem to blame their circumstances for their poor performance and state that if things could have been better or conducive to them, they would have given their best. This is not practically possible and logically correct since every candidate cannot have their own comfort zone in a placement opportunity; it is the other way around. The selection process is large to ascertain how comfortable a candidate is in a non-conducive atmosphere and how they overcome hurdles and obstacles to proving their ability.

Young graduates can defeat negativity and lack of confidence only by developing a very strong sense of positive mental attitude to have a well developed and balanced life in a career of their own choice which would lead to self-actualisation. The following steps can be very useful for an individual who seeks to develop their positive mental attitude towards an enriched life.

#1 Do not magnify your problems:  This is a basic requirement for the youngsters to bear in mind since many are found to carry their problems into a performing zone. It always only matters what you do in the present scenario, which can be done only if you focus on the present and respond to the situation appropriately.

#2 Do not encourage negative thoughts: PMA is a reflection of positivity, which can be possible if the negative thoughts are kept under control. You have to keep your mind fresh and refreshed without any confusion or tension. Keeping calm, looking inward and patting yourself with a pep talk that you will do your best whatever is the outcome will be of great value to keep negative thoughts away.

#3 Do not underestimate yourself: Many graduates often resort to a grave sense of underestimating themselves even before they start to perform. They do not realise that they have it within themselves to emerge successful in any situation. The fear of failure and the reluctance to accept things that go wrong plays on their mind very heavily leading to an underestimation of oneself, which amounts to self-inflicting an injury.

#4 Do not let go happy emotions: Mixing with positive and happy people in a happy environment brings out the happy emotions within an individual. This acts like a power bank from which an individual can gain sufficient energy for developing a positive mental attitude.

Positive Mental Attitude is a must for youngsters in an era of a globalized world which is competitive. It should be a way of life for all young graduates towards enlightenment which is everlasting
