Humiliated and punished in front of her classmates on the day of her exam, a 14-year-old girl went home and wrote a note that reads "They didn't allow me to write the exam. Sorry mom." Then she hung herself on Thursday. Sai Deepthi, a student of class IX of Jyothi High School in Malkanjiri was unable to pay the examination fee of Rs 2000 due to some financial trouble. City police on Friday arrested two officials and a teacher from the school.

"We have taken three persons, including a teacher, into custody. They will be produced in the court shortly," inspector Komraiah of the Malkajgiri police station

Unfortunately, Deepthi's inability to pay the fee resulted in a punishment- one that led to the drastic step. Sai Deepthi was allegedly made to stand outside the classroom and disallowed from entering. The girl's father works as a building painter, while her mother works in a supermarket.

Depressed and humiliated in front of peers and the school, the girl hanged herself from the ceiling in her house while her parents were away at work. On returning home, her parents found Deepthi hanging from the ceiling and alerted the police, who recovered a note purportedly written by her.

Based on a complaint by her parents, police have registered a case against the school management. The victim's body was shifted to Gandhi hospital for postmortem, police said.

Besides booking the three for abetment of suicide under section 306 of the Indian Penal Code, the police also invoked the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act against them as the girl belonged to a scheduled caste community, the inspector added.
