Vaddantune, Telusa Telusa and many other songs have found a new life through the voice of Sruthi Reddy Rapolu — the singer from Hyderabad who is taking Instagram, particularly her 52,400 followers, by storm with both her melodious voice and viral videos. And come to think of it, she was not interested in singing or Instagram! "I have been learning music since class II and used to sleep through all the classes initially. My motivation to go would be the chocolate I would receive at the end of it, despite dozing off," she says.

When the realities of a boring college life kicked in, she decided to give her voice a chance. Upon the insistence of a friend and sheer boredom, she got onto Instagram and put out simplistic videos — as compared to the stylised ones she shoots now — of her crooning to Hindi and Telugu numbers. It was with Emannavo that she gained popularity and since then, there has been no looking back for the Hyderabadi pilla.

I believe if you are good enough, chances will come. And I am not perfect in music, but I'm working on it

But with popularity came negativity, as trolls took to her comment section to spew venom. She was mocked and so was her voice, but she simply deleted them. And these trolls would even question her through direct messages on Instagram, where she used to fight her battles. “I did not want to fight in public,” she says. Slowly, she stopped deleting the comments and with that, stopped caring about them. “I realised that there will be a small section of viewers who will not like my videos and I would rather concentrate on the bigger section that does,” she says, adding that trolls have no effect on her whatsoever, though she accepts genuine criticism. But what really upsets her is when people call her (gasp) akka and ask her if she is married! “Can you believe it?” she practically squeals over the phone, as both of us burst out laughing. “I tell them I can be their akka, but the younger one! Or tell them that I won’t reply if they call me that,” says Rapolu with sass.

Rapolu has acted in six short films, her latest being Okka Kshanam. And though she has been auditioning for the Telugu film industry for quite some time now, the consistent feedback of ‘You sing well, you have a good voice, but you need practice,’ is what she continues to receive. “But I believe that when you don’t get a chance, you must create one,” and now that she has, she is loving it!
