Imagine people coming up on stage and performing their own spoken word poetry in English, Hindi, Telugu or Urdu, captivating the audience with their thoughts on the youth of today. This is what the scene will look like at Collab House at Out of the Box, Hotel Green Park, where people from all age groups will be seen celebrating youth and their power to change the world. To enable this celebration on the occasion of International Youth Day, the US Consulate General Hyderabad and Collab House have come together, for the first time, to organise a Poetry Slam on August 24.

Though International Youth Day is celebrated on August 12, it is also celebrated throughout the month which is why the event is on August 24

Akash Suri, the Consulate Spokesperson, while telling us about the intention behind organising this event says, "We’re looking forward to giving the young people of Hyderabad a platform to express themselves and to raise awareness of those issues that matter most to them through poetry, an art form with a rich tradition in both the United States and India." True to their word, all the performances at the event will be centred around three themes — Freedom of expression, Youth as agents of change and Youth transforming society.

We are excited and we hope that even people who haven't experienced poetry can come and be a part of it

Vineel Reddy, Founder, Collab House

Vineel Reddy, the founder of Collab House, tells us that the event is receiving good traction on Facebook and several people, including young children and families, have shown interest in the event. "We have kept the event open and it's free for all, irrespective of age," shares Reddy. So one could expect a full house at this event, which discourages the use of inappropriate language and encourages you to keep your piece under three minutes to make it short, sweet and engaging.

Collab House has always been known to conduct several activities which are at the intersection of art, technology and community, informs 30-year-old Reddy, "When we started about four years back, there was not much demand for these kinds of events but in the last two years, the appetite of Hyderabadis has certainly increased," he shares. "There are a lot of people out there who write poems on the back of their books and usually don't share it. This platform is a completely non-judgemental wherein everyone is encouraged to express their thoughts," he says.

The event, which has been getting a lot of traction on Facebook, starts at 6 pm on August 24. There is a stress on the performer to perform their own and original spoken word poetry

Even Suri agrees and states that, "International Youth Day is an opportunity for all of us to recognise the enormous impact that young people can have on their communities, their countries, and the world." He also adds, "Here in Hyderabad, we work closely with the youth to understand their vision for the future and to find ways to work alongside them to see how the US Consulate can help them to achieve their goals." Consider this as your invitation for the Poetry Slam event which celebrates the young blood of the country. So mark your calendar for August 24 as you have a date with spoken word poetry.
