Six young students from Sastra University, Thanjavur are striving to keep the culture of puns integral to our everyday lives through their FB page PunPaadu. For those of you don't understand Tamil, the word 'PunPaadu' literally means culture and we're hoping the rest of you get the pun in the word. Much like their name, the group comes up with some pretty awesome puns that guarantee laughs.

In fact, the team started this page right in the middle of their semester exams so that their friends on campus can share a few laughs and kill some of their stress. "My friends and I would often crack these puns, some liked it and some thought we were lame. But one day I called up a friend of mine and asked him if he thought it would be a good idea to start a page. Anyway, all our friends were so stressed about the exams so we thought we could at least give them something to laugh about," Rakesh Ramesh aka Punny Leone said. All the members have similar pseudonyms, Vignesh Vaikundaraman is also called PunGun Murugan, Ananth Raghuram is Punisher, Bhagavatheeshwaran is called Punnagai Mannan, Prashanth is also Punnakku and Vijay Kannan is called Poda Punny.

The team decided to launch the page only after they had a poll on Insta asking if they should. They got 70 percent positive responses and incidentally also met their sixth member through these polls, who offered to design a logo for them too! The puns are all mostly to do with Tamil pop culture and language, "There are not too many pages devoted solely to Tamil puns so we decided to focus on that. However, we have branched into other languages too now that we have viewers from other sites," the founder explained. But the team vows to primarily focus on Tamil puns.

The page has been online for just four months but already has 20,000 followers on FB and 10,000 followers on Instagram. The founders say while almost anyone can make pun-linked jokes what makes them stand apart is the fact that they only make 'clean jokes'. "People always make a lot of double meaning jokes that make people uncomfortable. We think that clean jokes are the need of the hour. So you won't find anything derogatory on our page," Rakesh said.

Like previously mentioned the page was only started for the students on campus but the team now has viewers from across the world. "About five percent of our viewers are in Malaysia, we have viewers from the USA and UK too," he explained.

The team's next big project is merchandising, a company has approached them and they've almost closed a deal on the same. The PunPaadu puns will soon find their way to T-shirts and mugs. All the founders are in their final year and three of them are going to be flying abroad soon for their post-graduation and three are going to start working soon. So what will happen to the page? "We've decided that no matter where we are we will work for the page and keep it alive. We will keep coming up with good puns!" Rakesh said.
